Taken from book titled "Our Clayton Family: Descendants of Vandy Clayton" by Cynthia Clayton and Clayton Rhodes.

Stephen Peter Rhodes - B 2-14-1866, Colleton Co, SC; D 1-07-45, Jenkins Co, GA; M on 3-13-1898 to Laura Ellis Smith (B 3-12-1883, Screven Co, GA; 08-28-27 of malaria; dau of William Pinckney Smith and Martha Josephine Nunnally Smith; granddaughter of Owen Pinckney Smith and Caroline Pengree Smith; granddaughter of Wilkens Harper Nunnally [originally from VA, planter, Methodist minister, county surveyor for Screven Co) and Mary Arnett Nunnally [descendant of John Arnett, Revolutionary soldier]; earliest known ancestor, Moses Pengree [saltmaker, Ipswich, Mass, 1640}; great-great-grandfather, William Pengree of SC, was Loyalist during Revolution, one of first settlers of British East Florida after losing his land in SC). He owned 2600 acres and forty-eight slaves in what is now Orange Park (Jacksonville), FL. Another ancestor was Hans Walter (\Vaters) who came to SC from England on the ship "Samuel" in 1735 and was granted 300 acres on the Edisto River near Orangeburgh. In 1762 he was granted 220 acres in St. George's Parish, GA, in what is present day northern Screven Co. The Revolutionary War Battle of Brier Creek in 1779 was fought on the Waters' property. Laura had been one of Stephen's students. Stephen moved with his family to Screven Co in 1876. He attended business school in Atlanta, GA; taught school; was on the Jenkins Co Board of Education for many years. It has been said that he wanted to retire from the Board late in life but was convinced to stay by the chairman who stated that he was too valuable since he was one of the few who still believed in education. There is a reprint of a letter in this book that he wrote to Robert Peeples in 1939 telling some of what he knew about his father's family. If this letter had not been written and ifRobert Peeples had not kept it for all these years, we would have had no knowledge that Thomas Hagood Rhodes' siblings Virginia, Emma and Julius ever existed, though some mention was found of them in Barnwell Co Court of Equity records. Tragedy struck the family in 1927. Laura died on August 28 of a pernicious form of malaria which also took the lives of three of her children ""within a span of four days. Some of the other children were also ill but survived when the nature of the disease was discovered. Stephen, who had taken jobs away from the farm up until then, had to stay at the farm and help raise the younger children. Stephen and Laura BUR along with their children Mae Alice, Leonard, and Constance in the Antioch Christian Ch Cem in Screven Co.
On 2-3-1898, Stephen bought 200 acres of land in Screven (now Jenkins) Co from Lewis F. Bargeron for $325. This land is still in the family. Stephen used to enjoy skinny dipping in a swimming hole that he. had dug in a branch on the property. It is said that everyone, especially young people, was delighte8. when Uncle (or Cousin) Steve would come to visit. He was a. man of high intelligence and always had a story to tell. When visiting his son Tommy in Sylvania, GA, he usually brought a math problem to stump Tommy. Tommy would also have one ready to try to stump his father. They would argue for hours about the best way to solve them. Stephen Rhodes maintained close ties with his cousin, John Franklin Clayton, son of John J. Clayton and Priscilla Beard Clayton, in SC. child 12.
