Gault, Joseph (b. ABT 1750, d. AFT 1785)
Note: TYPE Military
PLAC Charleston, SC

Joseph Gault served in the militia under Col. Brandon before and after the fall of Charleston. There is much discussion over the origin of the name Gault.
Some claim it to be Norman-French, others claim Norse_Galte because it is still found in both Denmark and France. Regardless of the origin of the name the family bearing it was early settled in Ayreshire Scotland and there are Gaults there today. The first Gault to arrive in America came in 1637 on the good ship Mary Ann followed by John and William Gault in 1684. They have been known for their energy, industry, integrity, thrift, stubborn pride, patience, loyalty, courage and moral strength.
The information on our Gault line ends with Joseph, as no further information could be located.
