Extraction from the book “The Ancestors of Francis Gillman White” by Patricia W. Shannon
Francis Gilman WHITE was born on May 11 1869 in Union County, South Carolina. Frank and his brother Gaz grew up under their mother and Uncle Arthur and Aunt "Frank"(Frances) and with their first cousins. They were sent to school, Stilesboro Academy, by their Uncle Arthur Davis and raised as Baptists. The farm developed successfully and they enjoyed raising cattle, sheep, horses, corn, peaches and cotton. Frank entered The Medical College of Atlanta and studied for a short time, discovering that he was not cut out for medicine.
He became associated with the J.M. High Department store there and became an expert in cotton and silk. During this period of employment he went to New York with Mr. High in order to select and purchase silk. After several of these trips he was described in the New York newspapers as the highest rated silk specialist in the south. From Georgia he went to Montgomery where he met and married his first wife, Annie Belle Collier. Of this union eight children were born. He remained in Nashville working for a new firm, Castinia and Knox where he worked until J.L. Cobb of Montgomery offered him more salary. He continued with J.L. Cobb until a change of partnership resulted in renaming the firm to Leonard's.
After his Montgomery experience he went south to Mobile, Alabama where L. Hamels engaged him. Mr. Hamel made several trips to Montgomery to engage Mr. White. He did not stay long in Mobile, for the Demarest Silk Mills in New York City made him an offer to be head drummer for the mills. He then moved his family to New York. After a while, Mr. Hamel in Mobile made him a better offer, which he accepted, and moved with his family to Mobile. He worked there for a while until he was offered a better assignment with the Golden Rule Stores in St. Paul, Minnesota. He accepted what he thought was going to be a very good position financially, and moved his family to Minnesota. He went often to New York on buying trips for this firm. Things did not work out to his satisfaction, so he returned to the south.
Shortly after this time, while Frank and his family were in Tennessee, Annie Belle died at childbirth in 1911. She and her infant son, Harris Edwards White are buried in the same grave in Oakwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Alabama. While trying to adjust to his personal loses and re-establishing his professional connections upon relocating to Montgomery, he was briefly married to Annie Claxton and that union soon ended in divorce. In 1915 he married Effie Pearl Miller. Frank and Effie were married in the bride's home in Montgomery, Ala. This union resulted in five children.
Mr. White moved to Pensacola for a position with La Mode, a very small ready-to-wear specialty shop. He received credit in his name for this shop and brought the first piece good and silk to La Mode. La Mode then moved to a larger location on Palafox Street, between Romano and Intendencia streets (Where J.C.Penney is today).
The economic depression reached such a state that it became necessary to change positions again. He moved his family again to Montgomery, where he was employed with Proteus and Pollan, Inc. for a short period. This did not prove satisfactory so he moved his family back to Pensacola where he attempted to restore the deteriorated La Mode to its' original fine condition. He failed to renew a written contract with the local owners; one of whose sons had taken the store's assets to invest in liquor unsuccessfully. This forced the store to close and to fail financially. Frank White lived in Pensacola until his death during a visit to Montgomery in the summer of 1940. He was educated at Stilesboro Academy and Medical School of Atlanta between 1877 and 1889 in Atlanta, Georgia. He died on Jun 14 1940 in St. Margaret's Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama. He was buried in Ramer Cemetery, Ramer, Alabama.
A note concerning the Stilesboro Academy.
A community grew along the Alabama Road, which became a settlement of prominent farmers who believed in schools and churches. The community life finally grew around an academy that was the center of a thriving interest. The village proper had always been scattered. It was called "Stilesborough" in honor of one of its prominent neighbors, William H. Stiles, and was incorporated by the name of Stilesboro in March 1866, with John T. Sproull, Larkin Floyd, W. 0. Bowler, as a body corporate and politic and the name and style of the Town Council of Stilesboro."
The corporate limits extended one mile in every direction from the Stilesboro Academy, and the commissioners had power and authority to grant licenses to retail spirtious liquors under such rules as were incident to incorporated towns and cities. In 1870 a road was surveyed from the academy to the depot and later opened on property belonging to Dr. S.F.Stephens, and E.T. and J.R. Henderson. The town proper is on the branch of the Seaboard Air line. It has never grown to any size. It was a cotton market at one time, but now there are only one or two stores. Sherman's route from Kingston to Dallas followed through Stilesboro. Many homes were saved, it is said, on account of the Masonic Emblem attached to doorways. The Federal soldiers used the academy and property damage was done by the usage of desks and benches as feed troughs.
