The "Hamilton Bank," organized under the laws of the State of New York, commenced business in January, 1853. First Board of Directors: Adon Smith, Henry Tower, John Mott, Lewis Wickwire, Alvah Pierce, John J. Foote, Delos DeWolf, Artemas Osgood, D. B. West, Smith Mott, William Felt, Alonzo Peck, and William Cobb. First President, Adon Smith; First Vice President, Alvah Pierce; First Cashier, D. B. West, who continued to be an active officer of the bank and its successor until his death, which occurred January 3d, 1894. Reorganized under the National Bank act May, 1865. New title: "The National Hamilton Bank." Charter expired in May, 1885, and was renewed for twenty years. Board of directors now, 1896: B. F. Bonney, F. T. Pierce, D. G. Wellington, Sidney D. Smith, George H. Barker, Hervey E. Eaton, William M. West, Adon N. Smith, and Leroy Fairchild. Officers: William M. West, President; Adon N. Smith, Vice President; Leroy Fairchild, Cashier; Charles J. Griswold, Assistant Cashier; Bookkeeper, John J. Taylor.
