Dear Tom,
You're must think that I am crazy by now! I discovered that I had confused
your tree at Ancestry.com with another one that I had downloaded. I am so
glad that I downloaded your tree - it was wonderful, and I'd love to have the
copies from that book of yours.
The other tree that I was looking at had a Frances Cunningham whose parents
were William Cunningham and Mary Dunlap. I got excited about that tree, too,
because of the similarities between names there and mine. I now realize that
that Frances Cunningham was not the same as mine because of differences in
birth dates. I have written to that person anyway, in hopes that he may now
have information about our Frances. I have the feeling his are S.C.
Cunninghams also. I'll let you know about that. Would love to find the
ancestors of Frances who married William Henry Hudgens.
I am pasting my Hudgens genealogy report to this E-mail below. If you have
information that I don't have, I'd love to have it.
By the way, where is Marion County, Florida, and why did they all migrate
there?
Here is my information:

Annie Hudgens Dunlap "Grandmother Dunlap" was born 10/5/1874 on her parents'
farm between Madden's Station and the Princeton Road, the fourth of seven
children of James and Ella Wharton Hudgens. She had twelve children and
eleven survived to adulthood. At 45 yrs. old, she became a widow. She took
her children and went to the farm where she began her dual role as mother and
supervisor of the huge operation. Despite the problems of the depression,
Annie found the time to serve her county and state. Since 1909, she had been
active in the DAR and was also a member of the United Daughters of the
Confederacy. She was chairman of the REd Cross in 1932, and at one time was
religious and welfare chairman of the South Carolina Council of Farm Women.
She learned to drive her Model A Ford and became a traveling Farm Home
Demonstration agent. Her motto: "We have our mountain-top experiences and we
would like to stay there. But when we come down to the level of real life we
are confronted with a duty - service to those who need our help. Our
response to those needs will determine whether or not we are living a
beautiful and dutiful life." R. T. Dunlap, Jr., often told his children that
his grandmother taught him to go do something for others when you yourself
are feeling badly - then you'll feel better.
In May 1944, Annie Hudgens Dunlap was selected as "South Carolina Mother of
the Year", and presented with a State Mother Certificate by Governor Olin D.
Johnston in an official ceremony on Mother's Day at Fort Jackson, Columbia,
S.C. She lived 11 more years after the honor until she suffered a heart
condition and then an arthritic condition that severly handicapped her. Fire
burned her home and totally destroyed it on New Year's Day, 1954. On June
14, 1954, officers of the Women of the Church bestowed on her an Honorary
Life Membership, the first such honor given in the history of the Mountville
Presbyterian Church. It was in recognition for her service as teacher,
pianist and church leader for over 30 years. On March 3, 1955, her suffering
ended and she was buried in the family plot in Laurens Cemetery. She was
called "Sweetie" from her childhood.
Notes for RUFUS THORNWELL DUNLAP, SR.:
Second child and only son of Sarah Ewell Black, was born on June 18, 1867, a
little over two years after the end of the Civil War. Little is known about
Rufus in his younger days. He apparently grew up managing his mother's farm.
Family history tells us that he attended school with a teacher named Mr.
Lee. He had a black man named Toad Dunlap, whose first job it was to carry
Rufus's books to school. Rufus later attended Bingham School for Boys,
Asheville, NC. His father died in 1879 when Rufus was about twelve years
old. He was devoted to his mother and her interests and did not marry until
he was 26 years old. By the time he married, he was not only a major land
owner, but had become a force in politics in Laurens, SC. Rufus is said to
have met Annie at a political function during the winter of 1892. He was a
successful farmer. Later the family moved into Laurens. He was a director
of the Palmetto Bank and the Bank of Laurens. He also owned a grocery store
and was an incorporator of the Laurens Glass Works. Rufus was a deacon in
the Presbyterian Church in Laurens and an organizer of the Mountville
Presbyterian Church in South Carolina for which he donated the lumber for its
construction. He married Annie Hudgens on April 20, 1893. They had twelve
children, He died on October 19, 1919, very suddenly of a heart attack, at
52 years old.
