Adolphus Coleman WHITE was born on Sep 14 1833 in Union County, South Carolina. He died on Mar 12 1904 in Jonesville, Union County, South Carolina. Adolphus died suddenly of Appoplexy (stroke). He was buried in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery. When the War between the States was just under way, Adolphus and his brothers Oliver, Henry and Robert went to the Court House in Union and volunteered their military services. Adolphus joined a volunteer company under the command of Captain W.J.T. Glenn on April 13, 1861, and went to Orangeburg. If his records are interpreted accurately as they appear on file in the Archives Department at Columbia, his volunteer company, under Capt. Glenn, subsequently became Ist Company E, 5th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry .It was mustered in the service of the Confederate States on June 4, 1861. His records show he went into Co.H, same regiment, rose from Private to 2nd Corporal, then to 4th Sergeant. His regiment then was transferred to the Army of Northern Virginia, and placed in General Bratton's Brigade.
As a color bearer, in the Campaign of '64, he was wounded. (Varying sources state Richmond and New Market) His records indicate it occurred in August, 1864 during the battle of Deep Bottom. He was taken to Richmond and on August 14th was admitted to Jackson Hospital where his left leg was amputated as the result of stepping on a land mine. He would remain on crutches for the remainder of his life. About three weeks later, on September 9th, he was furloughed home for sixty days. His records stated that he returned to Jonesville. When he returned home he found that his father, William, died about two years earlier. Adolphus and Oliver were appointed administrators of the estate.
Adolphus went on to attend law school and eventually was elected tax collector of Union County. Adolphus married Susannah Adeline Fowler and had two sons. Obviously, he was greatly handicapped, and worry from this and the upkeep of the family home led to the excessive use of alcohol. The marriage ended in divorce and he married Nancy Vinson. This marriage had no children.
Descendants of Adolphus have visited his gravesite in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery in Jonesville. Adolphus is buried with his brothers and sisters; parents and numerous other members of the White family. Proudly, a Confederate States of America bronze star is embedded at the foot of his grave. Other markings on his headstone indicate that he was a Mason and well revered in the community. He was married to Susannah Adeline Mamie FOWLER on Dec 23 1867 in Union County, South Carolina.
