Charles A.L.B. Oliver registered for the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery and drew Lot #32
of the 4th District of Muscogee County. Charles was living in Brinkley’s District
of Warren County at the time.
He is next found in the 1830 Census of Bulloch County, Georgia. A few years later
the family moved to Ware County, Georgia where they are listed in the 1840 Census
living in the 719th District.
During the Seminole Indian Wars Charles served as a private in Reeds Company of
Florida Mounted Militia in 1836. In 1837 he served in Martin’s Company of Florida
Mounted Militia. During the period of 1840-1841 he served in North’s Company of the
Georgia Mounted Militia. For service during the Seminole Wars he was given Bounty
Lands (80 acres) in the state of Wisconsin. Charles was living in Clinch County,
Georgia on November 12, 1850 when his application for Bounty Land in Wisconsin was
made.
On April 18, 1855 he made an application for Military Bounty Land under the Act of
March 3, 1855 and was granted 80 acres in Arkansas. Charles was living in Clinch
County, Georgia on April 18, 1855 when his application for Bounty Land was made.
Charles and family are listed as living in Ware County in the 1850 Census. During
the late 1850’s the family moved to the Yellow Water section of Duval County,
Florida and is listed in the 1860 Duval County Census. His occupation was farming.
Nothing is known of his activity during the Civil War. He would have been in his
mid 70’s at the time. His son, Charles R., was a private in Company E, 29th Georgia
Regiment of the Army of Tennessee. This unit was the Alapaha Guards of Clinch
County. William Shepherd Oliver enlisted in Company I, 8th Regiment Florida Infantry
on May 14, 1862. This unit was in the battle of Gettysburg.
In the Duval County , Florida 1870 Census, Charles and Mary are listed in the Yellow
Bluff voting precinct.
The 1880 Census of Duval County for election Precinct 4, does not record Charles
A.L.B. Oliver, but records Mary Ann (Capps) Oliver as living with her son William
Shepherd. It can be assumed that Charles died between 1870 and 1880. The special
Florida census of 1885 does not include Mary Ann and therefore it is likely she died
between 1880 and 1885. The place of burial is not known.
It is also not known what the initials A.L.B. referred to. He signed his name
Charles A.L.B. Oliver.

DEATH: Death certificate in pocession of submitter. Buried in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina, NY. Listed her parents as Francis Holliday and Sarah Talmadge. Father born in Michigan and mother born in Canada. Gave her birth place as Medina, NY but this is suspect at this time. Informer was their son Frank Simmons.

1900 US Census: Viola stated she had 6 children with 2 still living. Her and Alexander only had one child, Francis. Gertrude would have been the other. It is unknown what happened to the other children by previous marriage. Apparently first husband Wesley Hinman died in a fishing drowning accident 12 Aug 1881 in St. Marysburgh, Ontario, Canada. Gertrude was not raised by Viola. Who raised her? Francis , child of Alexander Simmons and Viola, was born in Canada so they may have met and married in Canada. The 1880 US Census shows Viola married to Alexander. Perhaps she had divorced Wesley and then married Alexander. Then perhaps son Frank was born while she was visiting Canada family. Then they may have lived briefly near her parents in Ontario, Canada where perhaps Francis was borned. Then they moved back to NY. These are just thoughts and theories for now.
