DEATH: Wife is widow in 1920 Census and last child born in 1917. Family info.

April 08, 2006. Visit to Clayton Cemetery Aucilla, Jefferson Co., Florida included Jefferson County Property Appraiser, David Ward, Gene and Nancy Slade (descendants of Anguish Butler Clayton), and 95 year old James Edward Clayton (aka Ed) who is the son of Burton Clayton. Ed recalls his father was ill and died of pneumonia on a Friday and they buried him the following Saturday afternoon in Clayton Cemetery in an unmarked grave. The neighbors made a make-shift coffin and carried his body up the hill by mule and wagon to the cemetery. Ed states his father died on a Friday January 16, 1916 and he was buried the following Saturday afternoon. Date calculations of Jan. 16th do not correspond to a Friday. Burton's death date January 14, 1916 was confirmed by Phillip Michael Clayton (aka Mike) who is the son of Ed Clayton. Mike states that Ed's wife Minnie kept family records. Ed states that his 6 year old brother Parkhill Clayton died of pneumonia (date unknown) and is also buried in an unmarked grave in Clayton Cemetery near his father's (Burton) grave. Ed states the land surrounding the one acre mortuary and the surrounding acres was once farmland owned by Cappen Butler Clayton, aka Cap Clayton. Ed recalls Cap and his daughter Docie.
According to Ed Clayton, in addition to the five marked graves and the two unmarked graves of his father and brother, there are other Clayton family members buried at Clayton Cemetery. Ed was unable to recall the other unknown souls who are buried there but was insistent that more than seven Claytons are at this burial site.

NOTE:
Early land records show John H Brickle purchased 80 acres in one transaction and then 40 more in each of two more.
The early census records before the Civil War show the family surname as Brickle. Then mysteriously after the Civil War the whole family's surname is Brittle. This is a mystery. The only Brickles in the area of Jefferson County FL after the Civil War are the blacks and mulattos. The whites appear to have changed their last name to Brittle. It definitely is the same family!

Info from pension records that she filed after husband death in 1897.

She must have had three more children along the way, since in the 1910 census it says she has had 10 children, 5 of whom are alive at that time (they must have been Aubrey, Scotia, Shelly, Capp Butler, and Orlando John). She is buried in the Clayton family cemetary in Aucilla, Jefferson County, FL. Her gravestone reads "Victoria A. Clayton, November 28, 1843; September 17, 1912".

Her name is spelled "Brickel" in the LDS databank.

Later in life when she filed for pension from the goverment for the death of her husband who had served in the Civil War she signed her name as "Brittle".

Daniel Flinn/Flynn married Sarah E.( Surname Unknown)
On Monday afternoon, last, fifteen of Capt. Rowell men on a scout near the Sandy Ford in Jefferson County, [Florida} discovered the trail of Indians on the plantation of Mr. Patterson . On pursuing a short distance, two Indians were discovered setting on a fence; a dash was made by the scout under Lieut. Wynn, when on nearing the fence, they were fired on by a large party of Indians concealed behind it. Two men were killed and two wounded; one supposed mortally. The volunteers returned the fire a short time and retreated. The Indians also made a hasty retreat, leaving one of their party dead on the field. Early next morning, Captain Newsom’s Company, a Company of Dragoons and regulars, and volunteers from Monticello to the number in all of about two hundred men, went in pursuit. The trail was very large and was pursued to the Augustine road, where the party scattered, and again united a short distance south of the road, where the trail was again taken by our forces. The course of the Indians was towards the large swamps and hammocks on the Ironfeence. The party was estimated to number from 70 - 80. The individuals killed. were George Donaldson, and Daniel Flinn, an old resident in the neighborhood. - Joshua Gray, and W. Anderson, wounded, the later supposed mortally.

Daniel Flinn married Sarah in Georgia about 1827. She was born about 1804 in Georgia. Daniel, Sarah and family lived at Station 4 on the Aucilla River in Jefferson County, Florida, 1830.
According to Niles Register of 6 April 1839, the Indians killed Daniel [Flinn] in 1839:
“Be it resolved by the Governor and Legislative Council That Captain S. J. Perry, late Assistant Quarter Master Florida Militia, in issuing six hundred rations, to Mrs. Flynn and family, acted the part of humanity, and in conformity with the true interest and meaning of the act of Congress, granting relief to sufferers similarly situated.
Resolved further, That in case the General Government refuses to settle and allow the same, the Quarter Master of the Territory of Florida be directed to allow the same to Captain S. J. Perry.” (Approved 4th March, 1841)

The Florida Flinn connection toBladen and Columbus Counties, North Carolina - rev.10/18/06
This is written by Kenneth Clayton LeDuc. My mother was Lily Sue Clayton; daughter of Frazier C. Clayton ; son of William J. Clayton and Sarah Amelia Flinn. Sarah and William J. were married December 23rd , 1851, in Williamsburg, FL (aka Station Four, now Aucilla).
Sarah Amelia’s father, Daniel Flinn, my Great2-Grand-father, born 1795 in NC (whose wife was also named Sarah, b.1810, Georgia), established a post at the crossing of the Aucilla River at Williamsburg , the territory of Florida, in 1829. His eldest son, James E., was born in Georgia (1828). Daniel’s subsequent children were born in Florida: Sarah Amelia (1830), Rebecca (1832), William F. (1834), Daniel B. (1836), and Fanny (1838). After Daniel’s death about 1839, wife, Sarah, remarried to Samuel R. Williams (b.1818) on November 22nd , 1842. Daniel’s property,S16T1NR6E, was sold.. Daniel’s widow, Sarah, and her second husband, Samuel Williams had three children; Susan (b.1843), Thomas (b.1845), and Drusilla (b.1847).
Where did Daniel and Sarah live in Georgia ? What was her maiden surname ? I didn’t find him in the 1820 census. Of course, she was only 19 when her first child, James Ervin Flinn, was born.
Chronologically :
1734 - Bladen County
was formed from New Hanover. The county seat of Bladen is Elizabethtown.
1764 - Brunswick County was formed from Bladen and adjoins to the southeast with the county seat at Southport.
1784-87 - Census - North Carolina : Benjamin and Thomas in Hyde, Eiseabel and Loflin in Surry and Rebecca . NO Daniel mentioned. Did Daniel move into the state during this interval ?
1785 - The WILL of Daniel Flinn, in Bladen County, NC. Mentions his wife, Mary, and offspring Daniel, Elizabeth, and James. I believe this was my Great7-Grand-father.
1790 - Census North Carolina : James Flin with 1 male over 16 (James), 1male under 16 (Daniel?), and 1 female (Mary? Elizabeth? or had James taken a wife?) where?; and John Flin Caswell; the following Flinn’s : Benjamin, Enoch, and Rebeccah in Hyde, and Leoflin and Thomas in Stokes. NO Daniel mentioned.
1800 - Census North Carolina shows Daniel Flin, head of household, in Bladen with 3 males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 16-25, one male 26-34; one female under 10, one female 10-15, two females 16-25, one female 26-44, and one female over 45. In addition he had 4 slaves. Mary Flin, head of household, in Bladen in a different household with no males and one female under 10, one female 16-25, one female 26-44, and one female over 45. James Flin in Brunswick.
1800 - On February 21st , Daniel Flinn bought 320 acres in Bladen County for 100 pounds.
1808 - Columbus County was formed from Bladen and adjoins to the south on the South Carolina border. The county seat is Whiteville.
1810 - Census - North Carolina - shows a D. Flinn in Columbus County with two males under 10 (one of them Daniel?) , 2 males 10-15,and one male 15-25; one female 10-15, one female 15-25, one female 26-44, and one female over 45.
1820 - Census - North Carolina - Flinn: Beaufort County: Enoch sr., Enoch jr., Thomas; Guilford County:Patrick; New Hanover County : James; Rutherford County: Paul; Surry County: James, Thomas. Flin: Mecklenburg County : Ebenezer, James, Jas, Wm; Surry County : John, Joseph.
1820 - Census - Georgia- ?
1830 - Census - Florida - Jefferson County - Daniel Flinn listed with one male 30-39, one female 20-29, one male less than 5, and one female less that 5. The wife is Sarah b.1810 GA, the son is James Ervin born 1828 GA, and the daughter is Sara Amelia Flinn born 1830 FL.
1840 - Census - Florida - Lists Sarah Flinn, Madison County.
1850 - Census - Daniel’s widow, Sarah , aged 40, was in the household of her second husband, Samuel Williams, 32, b.1818 GA, with Daniel’s children: Sarah 20, Rebecca 18, William 16, Daniel 14, and Fanny 12. Also there were Samuel and Sarah’s children: Susan 7, Thomas 5, and Drusilla 3. No James Ervin Flinn 22 ?
1851 - Sarah Amelia Flinn Married William J. Clayton on December 23rd, 1851 , in Jefferson County.
1855 - James Ervin Flinn Married Rebecca Clayton on April 1st, 1855 , in Jefferson County.

Since I estimate based on later census declarations that my Great2-grand-father, Daniel Flinn, was born in 1795, in NC, he may have been one of the sons of D. Flinn in the 1810 census, aged 10-15.
Where and when in GA did he meet and marry his wife, Sarah ? Where were their first child, James Ervin Flinn, born in GA in 1828?
