DEATH: In the 1850, but not the 1860 Census. Youngest child in 1860 born abt 1851. Steele Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Steele Creek, Mecklenburg, NC.

Accd. to "Aunt Ruth," Harriet's mother was an Alexander, and her line can be
traced back to a soldier in the Revolution. This proved to be incorrect; a
Jonas Rudisill, brother of Harriet, m. Amanda Alexander. Her b. yr. was furn.
by Thomas Clayton who has done some research on the family. It agrees with the date and
age at death on her headstone. He shows the childrens' names and birth order as:
John F., Amanda, Jonas A., Susan and William (apparently taken from the 1850
census). Stephen seems to have "married well." A Dr. Jonas Rudisill signed his will on
15 Jul 1829 and his very large estate was filed for probate in Nov 1830 (Book E, p. 84, Mecklenburg
Co. NC Wills). He left to his dau., "Harriet C. Rudisell (sic) a bed and
furniture, a bureau and table, a horse with saddle and bridle equal to her sisters, the
negro Maria, a third of the Robison plantation including the house that John
left, and a third of the meadow..." The will also mentions a wife, Susannah.
There is a record of marriage of a Jonas Rudisill to Susannah Clark in 1793.
She appears to have been a dau. of Willian and Susannah Clark (1727 - 6 Sep
1791), who are listed in the DAR Patriot Index which shows him as a soldier in NC. His headstone in
Steel Creek Cem. shows he died 2 May 1791, at age 70. On 25 Nov 1790, his
will was signed, and in Jul 1794 it was filed for probate. It's entered in Book A, Mecklenburg Co, NC,
Wills. L.M. Hoffman's book, "Our Kin", self pub. in 1915, contains a record of
the Jonas Rudisill Jr. family as it appears in a family bible then in the
posession of W.L. Gallant of Gastonia, NC. It says Susannah Clark, youngest
dau. of Wm. and Susannah Clark, was b. "the 22nd Day of May, 2 minutes after 7
in the afternoon in the year of our Lord, 1773." It notes she d. 1 Feb 1852. It
says Harriet was b. "at 6 o'clock in the afternoon" and was "baptized in Steele
Creek Church by Rev. James McRee."

John F. first appears in the NC census in 1860, when he was 24. He had m. Mary
three yrs. earlier. A volume in the Camden Co., SC, archives,
"Marriages of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina 1783-1868" compiled by Brent
H. Holcomb and published in 1981 at Baltimore by Genealogical Publishing Co.,
Inc., shows that John B. Grier, (a next door neighbor of Stephen M. Gallant)
was their bondsman, W.K. Reid, Clerk of Circuit Court, was the witness, and they were m. by James B. Watt, V.D.M.,
minister at that time at Central Steele Creek.
In 1870, the census shows he was 34, a merchant living in Steele Creek and owned
$800 in real estate and had personal property valued at $350. Aside from his
wife (listed as Eliza for Margaret Elizabeth) and four children, there was also
a John Blakely, 29, "merchant" with $125 in real estate and $2,000 worth of
pers. property. His birthplace was SC. One wonders is he and John F. were in
business together. There was a 24 yr. old domestic servant in the household,
Letty Potts, a mulatto. His 10 yr. old son, Franklin, by his first wife, isn't
shown, and may have gone to live with his mother's parents.
The census of 1900 shows John was running a boarding house at 508 Tryon St. in
Charlotte, with his second wife, Margaret. His son,
Franklin, b. Jun 1860, and dau., Sallie A., b. Jan 1875, were living with them.
They had 13 boarders when the census was taken. It's curious that there was no
mention of Franklin's wife, who was living until 1905...
J.C. Chalmers, (the minister at Central Steele Creek at that time) married John
and Margaret, accd. to the above quoted marriages reference.

William enlisted in the Confederate army, but the date and place were not
reported, accd. to "North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865." He first was reported
on company records on 5 Nov 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, VA,
9 Apr 1865, along with his bro., Jonas. In 1870, the census shows him living
next door to his father, with his wife, year old son and a black farm hand,
Frank Smith, 19. It lists his occupation as "Farmer", but shows he owns no land,
so probably was working his father's land. His personal property is valued at
$560.
The 1900 census shows him in Gaston Co., Gastonia Twp., on Long Street with a
wife, two dau. and two sons.
The census shows him b. in Gastonia, but
Steele Creek is more probable. There is a UDC marker on his grave in the
Central Steele Creek Cem.

The 1900 census shows him living at Sunday Ridge in Mecklenberg Co. with a
wife, Margaret, and four sons and two dau. The first child was born in 1886, so
they must have been m. in early 1886, when Lafayette was 21 and his wife was 19.
The Elmwood Cem. inventory gives his date of d., at age 70. Accd. to Minnie Lee
Gallant, he m. Margaret McIlwain, b. 15 May 1864, d. 6 Jul 1939. The census
shows her b. May 1867, but gives her age as 30. Minne shows their first child,
Robert Miller, b. 28 Dec 1882, d. 12 Dec 1966. The census shows Robt. b. Dec
1886. She shows: Alexander Gary,
b. 6 Jul 1896, d. 21 Feb 1916; Margarette Lafayette, b. 1 Apr 1901, d. 31 Oct
1939; Evelyn Jane, b. 29 Sep 1898, d. 12 Jul 1980. She noted there were other
children, and all are buried in Elmwood Cem. The census also shows a William U.,
b. Jan 1889; a Paul M., b. Oct 1891, and a Lively (?) b. Jun 1894. Hayes
Kennedy said Lafayette's farm was at Pineville, about 10 mi. south of
Charlotte. He said the brick family home was still standing a few yrs. ago.
The Lees list these additional children: Erskin, Jennie Lavinia, b. 1903, and
"Steven Miller died at 19."
