Accd. to "North Caroline Troops: 1861-1865," Jonas was a farmer in Gaston Co.
when the war began. He enlisted in Mecklenburg Co. at age 19 on 17 Jul, 1861,
and was mustered in as a Private. "Aunt Ruth" wrote: " He had to leave wife and
little son Thomas Augustus (b. Feb 1861) in care of his brother John-who was a
cripple and could not go to war. And some of his wife's sisters helped look
after her and the little Thomas. The little child that died in infancy and John
William were both born during the war. It was very sad times for the wife and
little children and sad for hundreds more. Jonas Albertus enlisted in Company
B. 13th Infantry N.C. Regiment Scales Brigade (commanded by Capt. Alfred Moore
Scales)."
He was shot throught the thigh at the battle of Gaines' Mill, VA, 27 Jun 1862.
"Aunt Ruth" gives this account: " He was flag bearer when shot through the
thigh, but didn't let the flag touch the ground. He carried flag with one hand
and with the other hand and good leg crawled to his Captain never let flag
touch ground handed it to Captain then fainted. Was carried to hospital and
stayed until in perfectly good shape before going back."
He was promoted to Corporal on 14 Oct 1862, and rejoined the company prior to 1
Nov 1862. He was "present or accounted for" until wounded in the left lung at
Chancellorsville, VA, 3 May 1863. He rejoined the company in Sep-Oct 1863 and
was promoted to Sergeant on 25 Apr 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox Court
House, VA, 9 Apr 1865.
"Aunt Ruth" wrote: "...he coughed up pieces of lung for years. Went the rest of
his life with one lung. He never was very strong and people could tell by his
voice that he only had one lung. He was awarded a badge of honor at close of
the war. Thomas Augustus would have received it at his father's death but he
passed before his father did so when he died, John inherited it as he John
was next oldest son."
Jonas was living in Sandy Ridge Twp. with his wife in 1900.
Accd. to his great grandsons, Gene and LG (Jr.)
Gallant, Ocala, FL, 1994, Jonas had a large store in Charlotte for many yrs.,
but died as a penniless drunk.
"Aunt Ruth" wrote that after Jonas and Mary were m., they "settled in Gaston
Co., few miles below Belmont on Southpoint Rd, one mile from the Catawba River
East one mile to S. West Fork sometimes called Little Catawba River." (I think
she lost me!)
The 1900 census indicates he was b. in 1842. Minnie Lee Gallant gives his b. yr.
as 1840, and this agrees with the Elmwood Cem. inventory which gives his age at
d. as 66. Minne Lee is the source for the dates for his wife and
their marriage.

Minnie Lee gives her yr. of b. as 1841, and her d. as 26 Jul 1907. The Elmwood

The 1900 census shows Lee living in Charlotte with his wife, Anna, 22, and a
dau., Minnie, b. 1898. So, they must have m. in 1897. This is confirmed by
the 1900 census, which shows them then m. for three yrs. "Aunt Ruth" says the
wife was
Anna Penegar, and that the couple died before 1924. However, a letter written
by his older sister, Anna Elizabeth, in 1955, indicated he died in May, 1954.
The letter also said that he "came to see me often," indicating Lee was living
in the Charlotte area when he died. A 1990 obit in the Charlotte Observer for
James Franklin Gallant, b. 25 Jun 1900, gives his mother as "Anna Pennegar."
The b. date shown is from Minnie Lee Gallant, who gives his date of d. as 28
Dec 1952.
Lee and Anna were m. by Rev. W.H. Willis. Witnesses were: Wm. Earnhardt, J.S.
Platt and P.L. Belk. (In Meck. Co. records Book 1889-1898) The 1920 census
shows him living on East Oak St. in a home with a mortgage. The 1910 census
shows him as a self employed retail grocer, as does the 1900 census. Most

Accd. "Aunt Ruth," Elizabeth m. John T. Wilkie. Gene Gallant says he was told
John was an ancestor of Wendell Willkie, unsuccessful Republican candidate for President in
1940. However, that Willkie's ancestors came from Germany and he was raised in
IN. "Aunt Ruth" wrote that they had no children and were dead bef. 1924.
However, Anna wrote from Charlotte to Gussie Gallant in Jan, 1955, to express
her sympathy over the death of Gussie's husband and her great nephew, Gus Gallant.
The letter says, in part, "...Gus was the fourth nephew in the last seven
months (to die) and eight months ago my last brother passed on to his eternal
home. I have missed him so greatly he was just two years younger than I..." She
says elswhere "...Am glad to tell you that my sister is in much better health
tho she is not well. We found a pleasant surprise when we got up this
morning...snow on the ground." The letter was signed "Aunt Lizzie" and the
return address was Rt. 2, Sharon Rd., Charlotte, NC. Her only living sister in 1955 was Minnie Emma.
However, the "sister" also could have been the widow of one of Anna's bros.

In the NC census of 1870, Stephen's age is shown at 68, which would make his
birth yr. 1802. "Aunt Ruth" wrote that he "lived to be almost 98 years old.
Died Nov. 1896," which would place his birth in 1798-99. Actual dates of b. and
d. were taken from his headstone in Steele Creek Cem., in Plot #3FW, were both
of his wives and several children also are buried. In 1870, he probably was
lying about his age so that he would not appear more that twice as old as his
wife.
Accd. to "Aunt Ruth," Stephen "settled in Mecklenburg Co., NC, at Steel Creek.
His home was on lower Still Creek."
The 1850 census shows Stephen, a farmer, age 50, and lists Harriet and five
children: John F., 10; Amanda, 10; Jonas, 8; Susan, 6 and William, 3. It also
shows a black family under the household with an illegiable last name: Jane (?),
17; John, 14; Wm, 18 and Jonas, 18. Accd. to Steele Creek historian Linda
Blackwelder, their neighbors on one side were John B. Grier, Henry and Beaty,
and on the other, Watts, McDowells and Byrums. Writing in 1994, she says, in
part: "This would indicate he was living near York Rd. between the areas of
Shopton Rd. and Sandy Porter Rd. John B. Grier lived and owned property at the
corner of York Rd. and Sandy Porter Rd. The Watts and McDowells lived near the
intersection of Shopton Rd. and York Rd. If this be the case, then it appears
that he lived on what is now called the Johnson's farm which has been owned by
many different families through the years. It was at one time a stage coach
stop and P.O. None of the old houses are there anymore..." By the 1870 census
he owned land worth $2,600 and personal property valued at $900.
