Parris, James William (b. 27 FEB 1926, d. 22 JUN 1988)

Note: James W. Parris died at his own hand. He suffered from coronary heart disease and emphysema. He was retired from the N.C. ABC Board having operated the store in Black Creek for several years. He was formerly a barber. His birth certificate in Snow Hill, N.C. incorrectly lists his mother as being Lillie Mae Beamon. She was his father's sister. His mother was Zellie Beamon Parris, sister to Lillie Mae's husband Leslie Beamon. The error was caused by the doctor who attended both women in childbirth.

Hi. I have been perusing the family tree that you have posted online -- very interesting -- but I wanted to clarify something for you that I know to be inaccurate.
I am Darla Joy Parris Smallwood, daughter of the late James William Parris (1926-1988). Your notation about his death contains two errors: 1. the calibre of gun used in his suicide 2. the nature of his illness. My father did take his own life with a gun, but it was not a .38 pistol at all. Furthermore, he did NOT suffer from cancer, only from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and emphysema. His death certificate will verify both my assertions here.
The work that you have done is quite admirable and useful, but I know that you want all the data to be correct. Please let me know if you have further questions about this branch of the family. I can also provide information about my child and the children of my brother (Jimmie Lynn Parris) should you wish to update/continue the genealogy.

One other note: James William Parris did indeed operate the ABC store in Black Creek, NC, for a number of years, but after that, he managed the Stantonsburg store up until his retirement, which came as a result of his illness. He was known by most everyone in that community.
