From: Jlartjob@aol.com Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 9:40 AM To: tom@mailserver.cbsva.com Subject: Long family tree Dear Tom: Thank you for your mail of the 22nd. It is nice to know that I have another cousin. I was in touch by phone with Gene Gallant last night and he told me that you had sent him most of the information that he has, however, he is sending me copies of everything that he has, along with a book about theGores' which I believe you sent him some time ago. Gene is very interesting, he has so much knowledge about the family and he remembers me from a meeting way back in 1943 or so. I don't remember him but my brother Charles sees him often, and went by yesterday to visit. Gene told me he had attended your fathers funeral, but I was not there. I am just learning the computer and really don't know much about how to find things in genelalogy so i will have to use snail mail to you when I get anything to send you. I am now 75 years old, have been married to the same girl for 54 years. We both served in the US Navy during the war. We have 2 grown sons, one is a writer in California, the other owns an advertising agency in Ormond Beach, he is married but has no children. We now live in DeLand, Florida. I was born in Ft.Pierce, Florida and raised in Miami. I graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, was an artist during the war for the Navy, and made my living for many years as an advertising executive in Miami. I have one brother, Charles, now 77, Two sisters, Marguerite Barton, 83, and Evelyn Houston 85. I will write all this out with their childrens names etc and send it along soon. Thanks again for all your work on this project, it is so interesting to me and the family. Hope to hear from you again soon, Your Cousin, John Long

Note: CENSUS:

Gabriel W Long 1 male 20-30 1 female 20-30 1 female under 5.
This matches with other family records because Sarah Caroline would have been under 5 (infant).
Other family sources have stated that they thought Gabriel lived in SC before moving to Florida. This would confirm that.
The Gabriel Long in Brunswick Co in 1840 probably is another Gabriel Long. There are other Longs that were in Brunswick Co, NC.

1850 US Census - They do not appear anywhere as of yet. I have checked indexes and FL, NC, SC, and GA records.

BIRTH:
Early census records indicate 1821. Later census records indicate older age. Marriage register in Putnam Co. indicates birth 1808 but I believe that 1821 is more correct.
Newspaper Article in the Thursday, 10 Jan 1952 issue of the OCALA STAR-BANNER, with photo, covering the 100th birthday of Stephen B. Long, a son of Gabriel and Betty Long. An original of this newspaper article is in the Collection of Beulah Holly Henderson in the Genealogical Section of the Ocala Public Library in Ocala, FL.

MARRIAGE:
He and wife were with girl under 5 in 1840 Horry Co SC Census.

DEATH:
Last known public record is 1874 tax list for Marion Co. Last wife Nancy
shows in 1880 census as widowed. Grand daughter Auzie told how she saw
him when she was really young, but that he died shortly thereafter.
Other family source confirms 1874 as death year and that he is buried in
the Chalker-Stanaland Cemetery.

OTHER:
Family bible in pocession of Carlos Long Clayton Sr. on Jacksonville.

Mr. Long left his home in Lake Bryant and rode south to Moss Bluff, reporting on all of the farms he visited, wrote a report of his trip and sent it to the editor for publication.

Some earlier Long's that could be related were as follows:
Long, William b. 1755 d. 1822 m. Catherine surface captain of Va.
Long, Gabriel b. Feb 1751 d. 3 Feb 1827 m. Elizabeth Stubblefield and
Captain Va. Ann Slaughter

There were two major migrations from Columbus Co, NC and Horry Co, SC. One was in 1848 and the other in 1852-1853. I believe Gabriel and his family came in the second migration. Elizabeth's sister who married a John C Graham came in the first migration. He was born in the Pireway, Columbus, NC area. Married Elizabeth Ann GORE about 1839. They show in the Shallotte, Brunswick, NC in 1840 with no children. Elizabeth may have been pregnant with her first. They do not show in the 1850 census. Eugene Gallant, a cousin of mine says that Gabriel registered his branding iron with Marion County in 1848. I believe they were either in SC or in transit someplace and the census missed them. The family does show in the special 1855 Florida census and the numbers of children match with the 1860 US census. They moved to Welaka, Putnam, FL sometime in 1856.

Gabriel was a farmer and also a Minister. He would travel from church to church (Baptist) on assignment. He also performed 15 marriages in Putnam County from Nov 1860 till Jan 1872. Many of these marriages were for his own children. His sister-in-law and her husband were John Conner Graham and Meriam Gore. They lived east of the Oklawaha River in Marion County. Grahamville and Conner are named for him.
During the civil war Gabriel was apparently called upon to be a chaplain to the few Confederate soldiers that were incarcerated at the St. Augustine Fort. John Graham was the Captain of the central Confederate defenses. They called upon Gabriel to do a little spying but he was caught. The Union forces in St. Augustine decided to bring Gabriel's family to the fort to prevent a rescue attempt. Gabriel was offered to either desert or be killed. He made the obvious choice and served as a Chaplain for the Union Troops. After the war Gabriel was despised by many including John Graham. While there son Stephen carved his initials in a school desk.
Elizabeth died about 1870. Gabriel is recorded as marrying Amanda E. Sanders 24 Nov 1870. She must have died shortly thereafter as Gabriel then married Nancy Chalker Stanaland, the widow of Hugh Stanaland who owned Hugh's Island. This island was a large raised portion of land in the scrub. It is on her tombstone that she was the wife of Hugh and Gabriel. Gabriel died shortly after 1874. That was the last year that he paid any taxes. He lived with Nancy in Marion County.

One daughter of Gabriel married a Quigley and lived in St. Augustine.

Son John was never married but was an ambassador to Eqypt. He was also a judge.

Hi, I came across your posting on Micajah Long. My mother was a Simmons. I have our line back to two brothers Thomas Simmons father of Sarah "Sallie" Simmons who married Jonathan Gore and my direct line Sarah's uncle John Isaac Simmons. I just wanted you to know that Rev. Gabriel had a brother Rev. James Gore. Actually an older brother. He was born in 1818 and married Elizabeth Gore in 1840. I do not have their children. Do you know who Micajah's parents were? Suzy

THE OCALA BANNER -FRIDAY, JULY 31, 1903
---
KILLED IN SCOTLAND
Honorable John G. Long, Consul General at Cairo, Meets with
Sudden Death
A telegram was received in Jacksonville announcing that Honorable John
G. Long. head of the National Republican Commission of this state and
Consul General, to Cairo, Egypt, has died from the effects of an
accidental fall while visiting in Dunbar, Scotland.
Judge Long was a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, but moved to
this county when quite a young man and still owns property interests
here. He afterwards moved to St. Augustine, where his home has been
ever since. He was 67 years of age. He was appointed Consul General
to Cairo. Egypt in 1899.
Judge Jong was on his way back to the United States when the accident
occurred which resulted in his death.
Judge Long has two brothers living in this county, Messrs. Stephen
D. Long and Solon Long.

Judge Long never married, but years ago Mr. Stickney, a close friend
of his died, and Judge Long became the guardian of the children, which
he adopted. These children were Misses Genevieve and Alice Stickney,
two beautiful and accomplished young ladies and Percy C. Stickney,
deputy U. S. Marshall for the southern district of Florida, with head-
quarters in Jacksonville. and R. A. Stickney, formerly of Ocala.

The OCALA BANNER -FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1903

A WILL CONTEST
Honorable John G. Long, American Consul to Cairo, Egypt, who died from
an accidental fall in Dunbar, Scotland, while on his return to the
United States, was a man of considerable wealth. He owned very valuable
property in St. Augustine and Washington City. The deceased had several
brothers, one of whom lives in this county, and a sister who lives in
St. Augustine. Mr. Long adopted the Stickney children and lavished
upon them his wealth and gave no financial help to his own kith and kin
notwithstanding the fact of their extreme poverty.
Mr. Percy Stickney claims to have the will of the deceased consul and
has gone to Washington to have it probated.
The brothers and sister are anxious to have the will read and probated
in St. Augustine. but whether probated in Washington City or St. Augus-
tine, it will be contested.
The general public is in sympathy with the sister and brothers.

THE OCALA BANNER -FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1903

THE WILL OF THE LATE JOHN G. LONG

Information is received from St. Augustine that the will of
the late John G. Long will be probated in that city and it
is not believed that it will be contested by the heirs. at
law.
This will provides that the income of certain properties in
St. Augustine shall go to Percy Stickney. His Washington
property goes to Miss Alice Stickney. He gives certain
property to his sister at St. Augustine for life and it is
afterward to go to her daughter. In addition, he gives his
sister, Mrs. Quigley, an annuity. To his brothers, James
and Stephen, he gives $500 in cash and certain stocks. The
balance of his property is to be sold and the proceeds
divided among Mrs. Quigley, James and Stephen Long and the
widow of his deceased brother, George Long.

LETTER FROM STEPHEN B. LONG

Will you allow me space to reply to a statement contained in
your paper some weeks ago in regard to the will of my brother,
the late John D. Long.
The will made by him is entirely satisfactory to all the members
of the family. During his life time if he did not assist
financially his brothers and sister more than he did. it was
because they refused to ask it at his hands and not because of
any failure on his part to offer it.
Very truly,

Stephen B. Long

Never married.

Was a judge and ambassador to Eqypt. On his way home he visted Dunbar Scotland where he took a fall and died. The family says that he was a bit of a lady's man and got caught. The jealous husband tossed him out the second story.
