DEATH: FL Death Index
Name: Margueriete Ella Gallant Death Date: 1937 County of Death: Marion State of Death: Florida Race: White Gender: Female

Accd. to Thomas Clayton, she was a dau. of Henderson Hargett, b. 1832, and
Eliza ______, b. 1829. The first of their seven children was b. 1852, so they
must m. abt. 1851. They must have come from Scotland, because Gene Gallant
recalls that Ella had a definite Scotish burr in her speech.
After her husband died in 1904, the family circumstances were drastically
reduced, and she was forced to place two sons, Robert and Len Gerald, in an
orphanage, and William went to live with his Aunt Elizabeth in Charlotte.
Augustus went to Ocala to work in a foundry and two of the dau. were already m.
This left her with only three dau. to feed, and she supported this reduced
family by working as a seamstress.
In later yrs. she would spend a few months each yr. with various of her married
children. In the 1930s, she usually sent several Winter months with son Gary
(Len Gerald) and his family in Ocala, FL. It was there, in 1939, she was
hospitalized with pneumonia, fell from her bed and died of a skull fracture.
Her grandsons, Gene and L.G.Jr., recall that during her Ocala visits, a
quilting frame would be set up in the living room and she and the other ladies
of the family and their friends would make quilts.

Just discovered your information on Ancestry.com. You've done a very
thorough job on John Conner Graham's line. He was my ggg grandfather and I,
too, have extensive information which I'd like to share with you if you are
interested. I grew up in Conner, FL - named for him - just next door to
Grahamville, FL - also named for him. In fact the John Conner Graham
Cemetery is within walking distance of my parents' home.

On thanksgiving 1998 we had a large reunion and celebration of the 150th
anniversary of JCG's move from Horry County, SC to FL. We have many of his
possessions spread among his descendants. Actually, one of his great
grandchildren is still living - but not the one you list as "living" in your
file. Columbus Wellington Mills, whom you list as living, is actually
deceased. Katherine Lee, my Aunt Kitty, is still perking right along - we
just celebrated her 102nd birthday.

Would love to share info with you - how are you related to John Conner?

I copied my last e-mail to you to my aunt Carol Wellhoner Farmer, who is
somewhat of a historian, and who has been writing a book for years on
eastern Marion County. She reminded me of something you may or may not have
seen.

For a number of years Sybil Browne Bray wrote these little paperback books
about Marion County called "Salty Crackers". I think there were about ten
volumes before she stopped doing it . There was an article in vol. 3
written by Oneta Baldwin Guinn about Gabriel Long. It contained, among
other things a couple of pictures of Stephen Bryant Long, one of Gabriel
Long and second wife Nancy Chalker Stanaland, and one of Auzie Clayton. I
don't know if you've seen this or if these little books are even available
anymore, but if you'll give me your snail mail address I'll copy the
pertinent pages and mail them to you.

Elaine

My GGUncle John Conner Graham did not live in Conway ,S.C.Beulah Holly Henderson wrote a Book and a very good one-however she lived in Fla. In 1939 she came down here gathering information and directions for her book.John Conner Graham lived near-by my farm today Loris S.C. and his house was in both North and South Carolina. He left Loris -Horry County,S.C. with several other families going to Fla. -- by Covered Wagons --where today Grahamville,Fla. and Conner Fla.were named for John Conner Graham. The" Old Graham Cemetery" where my GGGGGrandparents John Graham and Mary, My GGGGrandparents William Graham and Elizabeth Bellamy,My GGGrandparents William Bellamy Graham and Jane Conner and more still remains today in "Mitchell Swamp" near-by Loris,S.C.This land was apart of a Kings Land Grant George 11 and 111.the" Kings Seal" is still handed down in my Graham family and will be in well entrusted hands.
