I picked up a couple of tidbits over the weekend talking to my Aunt Carol. She thinks the picture in Salty Crackers is correctly identified. She says it was identified by Ethel Stanaland Rogers, who was Nancy Chalker Stanaland's granddaughter and a very reliable source. Plus - we held it up next to our portrait of Meriam Helen Gore Graham and
couldn't see any family resemblance at all. Aunt Carol has a letter that Nancy wrote to her family after marrying Gabriel - which the family very much opposed. In the letter she talks about how good life is being married to him and begs her family to resume contact. They only accepted her back after his death (they were only married 2 years) and when she died the headstone reads only Nancy Chalker. Fascinating.

I know that when I put together the website I ran across a reference to John
Conner's shunning of a brother-in-law who "consorted with the enemy". At
the time I didn't know who it was.

Hope to get the website back on line shortly.

Thank you for the update. I figured the picture was but when someone
speaks otherwise it is nice to have a confirmation one way or the other.
Interesting sidebar about Nancy Chalker and Gabriel. Her headstone does
say wife of GW Long though. I knew that they were married only a couple of
years. He died about 1872 and they were married about 1870. The thing is I
also have a marriage record of Gabriel marrying Amanda Sanders on 24 Nov
1870 and then he shows up in Marion County married to Nancy shortly after.
The marriage to Amanda was in Putnam County. Do you know anything about
this or perhaps someone knows. Did Amanda die suddenly? When exactly did his
first wife die? I figure in the late 1860's, but I have not found any info on this.

Gabriel had been forced basically to serve the North in the civil war. The
family tells that most of the friends and relatives in Ocala could not
understand this and shunned Gabriel after that. Perhaps that is why
Nancy's family was so opposed to her marriage to Gabriel. Of course sometimes
families can just be that way.

Notes for ANNIE BROOKINS:
About Annie Brookins Clayton
Burton Clayton and Annie Brookins are the parents of living individual, James Edward Clayton (aka Ed), and Parkhill Clayton who is buried near his father, Burton, at Clayton Cemetery. Annie Brookins Clayton was pregnant for "Shorty", Beroth Gene Clayton, at the time her husband, Burton Clayton, died. Burton died 14 Jan. 1916 and their son was born 07 August 1916.
This e-mail dated April 2006 is from Phillip Michael Clayton (Mike) who is the son of James Edward Clayton:
"One story Daddy shared with me was that after Burton's death, several men who owed him money felt that with his death their debts were settled. They never made an attempt to repay Annie even though she was a widow woman with three children and a 4th on the way. That was down right contemptible to me. She went on and raised 4 very good children whom everyone respected and liked. That says a lot about her will and character." Mike Clayton

Dear Tom,

I haven't been researching this line for very long (started a few months ago) so my information hasn't been entered into my database and really I just have bits and pieces(I use Reunion 6.0 for the Macintosh).

Here is what I think I know so far: I started with Cynthia because that is the name my mother remembered. Cynthia was her favorite grandmother and she was with Cynthia when she died. I wanted to find information as a gift for my Mom.

Cynthia Ann Lanier's father, John Henry Lanier, was born 1835 in Meriwether Co., GA. His parents were James Lanier b 1785 in NC and Polly Smith b 1793 in NC.

This is from the 1850 Federal Census for Meriwether Co., GA. There was another Lanier family living in Meriwether, too.

2 431 431 Lanier James 65 M Farmer NC
3 431 431 Lanier Polly Y. 57 F NC
4 431 431 Lanier Sintha A. 18 F GA
5 431 431 Lanier John H. 15 M GA
6 431 431 Bryant Nancy C. 31 F GA
7 431 431 Bryant Martha A. L. 4 F GA
8 431 431 Bryant William 2 M GA

John Henry first married Louisa Bess (dob unknown).I think this couple had 3 children (including Cynthia Ann) because in one publication (Lanier by Ingersoll, 1965) Cynthia is referred to as their third child. I don't know when or where Louisa Bess died. John Henry enlisted in the 32nd Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army on May 6, 1862 (age 27). He was paroled at Greensboro, NC, May 1, 1865. According to his pension application he was in Florida by 1867. He married 2nd Martha (Kitty) Curry who was born 1860 in FL. She was considerably younger than him (about 25 years). It is thought that they married abt 1885 in Marion Co., FL The names I found for children from this marriage were:

Jesse (1886), William (1888), Ivan Ernest (1892) and Fred (1894). All born in Ocala. Since my Cynthia A. Lanier married Emory C. Garner and had at least one child (my g-grandmother, Emma Lee Garner) in Marion Co, FL, I assume children from his first marriage (and perhaps
even his first wife) came to Florida with him. Wayne Lanier, another Lanier researcher, sent me the following two emails and I'll append them just as sent.Katherine,According to LANIER by Louise Ingersoll, page 338, is the following entry.

John Henry Lanier, b. 1835, GA, d. 1910, Ocala, FL m. Meriwether Co., GA,
August 26, 1837; m. 2nd Kitty, or Martha, Curry b.1852, d. 1900, FL. Lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Their third child was Cynthia Ann Lanier b. 1862, GA, d. June 26, 1938, m.Emery C. Garner, lived Plant City, FL. They had five sons and one daughter. (Only two of their children are named in her book.).Elburtus Garner, b. Jan. 29, 1882, Alachua County, FL, d. Oct. 22, 1918 Kissimmee, FL and Emma Garner m. Mr. Nix of Plant City, FL.

Wayne

Katherine,

According to the dates, Louisa Bess would have been Cynthia's mother. John Henry Lanier married 2nd Kitty, or Martha, Curry. The first child born to John Henry/Kitty was Jessee Cooper Lanier, b. 1886.

The two children of Cynthia Lanier/Emery C. Garner listed were old enough to marry, so I assume the other four boys were youngsters. (Assuming can be a dangerous thing.)
Look on page 338 [of the Ingersoll book) for John Henry Lanier and his children. The printer has erred in the numbering of John H. His siblings are numbered 37215 (Mary), 37216 (Son Lanier), 37217 (James J.), 32718 (Cynthia), 32719 (John H.). I suppose it was not too difficult to transpose the 2 and the 7 in 1965, but it makes it very confusing today. There is a portion at the bottom of page 338 continuing to the middle of page 339 that is confusing to me; maybe you can help.

Yo' Cuzn,
Wayne
http://www.mindspring.com/~wdlanier/

There is a family story that four of these sons
drowned while fishing on Lake Apopka when a storm came
up. My Mom doesn't remember names or how old they
were when this happened
I have a copy of John H. Lanier's Confederate Pension
application of which I would be glad to send you a
copy.

There was a land patent issued to John H Lanier, Jr., 23 Feb 1895 for land homesteaded in Marion Co., Fl. Application 18982; homestead
Certificate No. 10875. I initially thought this was Cynthia's father but now I think it might be a son of John Henry. I think this because a John
H. Lanier, Jr., submitted the CSA pension application for his father. I plan to order a copy of the land entry file from the National Archives.
The Lanier family is well researched (and in some
cases—quite illustrious). The Ingersoll book is out
of print but there is a copy in a SF genealogy
library. I plan to go there soon and copy information

Cynthia's line is:

Nicholas>Clement>John>John>Sampson>James>Nathan>James>John H
Wayne's website has lots of information. Anyway, as you can tell I still have lots of work to do on this line. I hope my information is useful. Except for the pension info, nothing is personally documented by me yet.

Let's keep in touch. What is your line? Have you been researching this family long?
