Isham Clayton drove cattle for the Colonial Army during the Indian Wars. REF: "Colonial Records of SC, Documents relating to Indian Affairs 1754-1765" edited by William L McDowell, Jr.
He also was a Private in John Chevillette's Battalion during the Cherokee Wars REF: "Colonial Soldiers of the South 1732-1774", Murtie June Clarke, 1983.
Oral history from Middleton Clayton letter says that Isham Clayton was a descendant from Rev. John Clayton of Yorkshire, England who migrated to Henry County, Virginia about 1637. Subsequent research shows that this Rev. John Clayton returned to England. This does not exclude that some of his children might have stayed in the Colonies.
