Raftis, Michael Joseph (b. 12 APR 1941, d. 16 APR 2004)

Michael Joseph Raftis passed away on April 16, 2004, at his home. He was 63 years old.

Mr. Raftis was born on April 12, 1941, in Waterloo, Iowa. He grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota, and later served in the U.S. Navy as a Sonar Technician.

Mr. Raftis then moved to Terre Haute, Indiana where he owned radio station WVTS and was in radio broadcasting for over 25 years, including the long-running Sunday talk show with Bob T on WKTK in Gainesville, Florida, for the past 8 years.

Mr. Raftis loved to fly and had been a pilot for many years. He owned and operated an Advertising Agency, Advertising Design, Inc., and had owned a restaurant, the Pink Flamingo, in Terre Haute.

Mr. Raftis moved to Orlando, Florida, in 1981 and sold cars for Sun Ford and later was the Advertising Agency for Bob McCleland?s Chrysler/Plymouth in Orlando.

As Mr. Raftis was piloting around he discovered Cedar Key and was fascinated by the wonderful little island and its people. He then bought an old log house on Cedar Key that had been built in 1938. He fixed up the house that became his haven for the rest of his life. He then opened a restaurant (Salty?s Oyster Bar & Pizzeria) in Cedar Key and later bought The Cedar Key Beacon newspaper in 1984. With his radio background and love of politics, he ran the newspaper until his death.

Mr. Raftis? hobbies included playing his tenor saxophone any chance he got, fishing, laughing, loving, especially his love for cats and women.

Mr. Raftis was a Charter Member of The Cedar Key Eagles, Aerie #4194, a member of the Cedar Key Lions Club, Chiefland Rotary Club, Cedar Key and Chiefland Chambers of Commerce, the Cedar Key Architectural Review Board and helped with many other organizations.

Survivors include one sister, Cathy Raftis of Aurora, Colorado, 6 ex-wives, 5 Daughters, Wendy Robd of Hastings, Minnesota, Connie Raftis of Cedar Key, Florida, and Jill Raftis of Ham Lake, Minnesota; Robin & Lacy of Indianapolis, Indiana. 7 Grandchildren.

Mr. Raftis was preceded in death by his parents Harold Raftis and Coletta McElroy Raftis, and one sister, Mary Ellen Bryant.

Visitation for Mr. Raftis was held on April 19th, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland, Florida. An Irish Wake is scheduled for Saturday, April 24th, at his home in Cedar Key, Florida, starting at 2 p.m.
