The Dodson family came from Halifax County, Virginia. Rev. Jesse Dodson and wife, a first cousin, Ruth Dodson came to Tennessee about 1790, because Jesse had a land grant in Green County. In 1800 he helped to establish a church in Clairborne County. He moved to Warren County Tennessee about 1810 where he made gifts of land to several of his children, among them Tabitha Dodson and Son Jesse Dodson. From another source Rev. Jessie Dodson Sr. who came from Halifax County Virginia, settled first in Claiborne County then went to Hiwassee purchase (which is now McMinn County). His home still stands at Eastenolle, built 98 years ago (according to this source, date unknown). He was a minister. The church gave him a horse and saddle, a small farm and house. He preached for several churches around McMinn County. He preached 61 years and died at the age of 91. He owned 300 acres in the heart of the Eastanolle Valley. The Matlock's, and Walden's, Rice's , Hailey's, and Dodson's were all kinsman and intermarried to hold property in hands. All were quiet wealthy. The tomb of Isaac Rice reads:FAIR WELL TO WIFE & CHILDREN ALL ADIEU, I'VE SPENT WITH YOU A JOYFUL LIFE. I MUST DIE, SO MUST YOU.History: Among the early settlers who came to this territory were some families from Hawkins county. Isaac Rice was their leader. He married Martha Matlock. They settled along a creek near what is now Rockwood, King Creek. Isaac Rice built a log cabin on a small hill above the spring that now supplies water to Rockwood. W.M. Matlock a brother-in-law to Rice and Joseph Mee also a brother-in-law built cabins near by. These three men built a log church house which they organized in 1812. Rice had learned new ideas and teachings of the gospel in his home under the instructions of Barton W. Stone. They had many converts. The church later burned. In a few years Rice moved to McMinn County and bought 1000 acres of land 5 miles east of Athens in the Mount Harmony community. He built a mill (now owned by the Bruce and Orr families). He built a church near the cemetery and later moved the church to Mount Harmony, and changed the name of the church. He had three sons who settled Riceville. They were John, Charles and Miller. Charles named Riceville. Charles married Eliza Hailey first then Julia Cobb, he fathered 18 children, Miller married Leatha Hailey and had 4 children. John married Tabitha Jane Dodson and had 10 children. Isaac Rice is buried 5 miles East of Athens on old federal road in Mount Harmony Community. He first married Susan Senter they had 6 children: Nancy, John, James, Isaac, Tandy and Susan. He then married Martha Matlock on March 5, 1809.
