Note: listed as a private in the CSA March 4, 1862. Wounded at Cedar Run, VAAugust 9, 1862. Appointed 4th Coporal December 1863, 3rd Sergeant Oct.1864. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA April 9, 1865.

W.M. GIBBS
W.M. Gibbs a prominent citizen of Pleasant Grove died Monday and wasburied Thuesday at Pleasant Grove church with Masonic rites. Theattendance was large as he was well known all over the country. Mr.Gibbs had held several offices of honor and trust. He was Ordinary forthree terms about thirty years ago. Later he was sheriff of the countyfor four terms.
He leaves several children, one of whom is L.E. Gibbs, who is thepresnt [sic] sheriff. He was 72 years old and a Confederate veteran. Hewas raised in Wilcox county and he had seen it grow from a wilderness toone of the finest farming counties in the state.

William M. Gibbs was born 12th of May 1843 in Irwin County nowWilcox County, was raised a farmer boy, was a great cattle and sheepdriver, his father being a large stock owner. He received a commonschool education in the schools of the county, he volunteered to go tothe civil war March 4th 1862 at Abbeville and was a member of Co. E. 49thGa. Regt. and was a good soldier, was in sevral [sic] battles of theChickahomny around Richmond, the battle of Frasiers Farm, the secondbattle of Manasas Cedar Run and the surrender of Harpers Ferry in 1862,in the battle of Chancellorsville and the Wildreness 1863 there he waswounded and was away from the Company about ninety days in Hospital andon a short furlough home he rejoined his company and was with itcontinuously until the surrender of Lee on the Appomotax [sic]. Hewalked home from Virginia in about eighteen days, got home about thefirst of May 1865, helped his father and brothers to finish the crop andthen began to work for himself. Married Nancy Mixon 1867 and to themtwelve children were born, ten boys and two girls. He joined UnionChurch by Baptism and then Pleasant Hill by letter.
He was elected Ordinary of Wilcox County in 1881 and made a goodrecord as an officer. Some years afterwards he was elected Sheriff ofWilcox County for three terms in succession, after that he was appointedNotary Public, he was a good servant of the people.
He joined the Masons when quite a young man and proved himselfworthy of every trust reposed in him by the fraternity. He servedAbbeville Lodge as secretary for four years, Junior Warden two years andthen Irwinville Lodge three years as Worshipful Master, then a member ofRebecca Lodge when he died.
A public servant is gone, a good man has fallen, he passed awao[sic] quietly at his home july 10th, 1916, surrounded by his family andwas laid to rest at Pleasant Grove church by a large crowd of friends andrelatives.

Mrs. Lucinda Gibbs Taken By Death
Mrs. Lucinda Gibbs, 76, died at her home in Wilcox County andfuneral services were held today at the Siloam Baptist church, which theRev. Charlie Stewart of Pitts, and the Rev. D.W. Gilmer, of Abbevilleofficiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Dorsey FuneralHome in charge of arrangements. Singers were Mr. and Mrs. A.L.Hartsfield.
Mrs. Gibbs, the widow of Phillip Gibbs, was a native of Wilcoxcounty, a daughter of the late William H. Gibbs and Nancy Mixon Gibbs,and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist church.
Suvivors are two sons, W.H. Gibbs, of Abbeville; Lucius Gibbs, ofPitts; four daughters, Mrs. Ealon Henry, of Douglas, Mrs. AnnieSatterfield, of Pitts, Mrs. Lucille Satterfield, of Pitts, Mrs. MyrticeSmith, of Syalton; four brothers, W.A. Gibbs, John A. Gibbs, David Gibbsand Frank Gibbs, all of Rochelle; 46 grand children and 32 great grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Ernest Gibbs, Lanier Gibbs, Aaron Gibbs, MarionGibbs, Dan Knight and Bill Ledford.
