Gallant, John (b. 1810, d. 4 SEP 1876)
Note: Source for John Jr. is the 1850 Amite Co., MS census, which shows him as a 40
yr. old farmer, b. in SC and living with his father. It isn't clear when he moved
from SC to MS. The 1870 MS census lists his age at 66 (prob. an error) and living
with him, a female, A.E., 49, b. in SC. This could well be his sister, Pamelia E., who
out lived him by 21 yrs. The Lees give his yr. of b. as 1800 and show his d. as 5 Sep 1876.
They also show him as "single." This is bourne out by a family bible clipping in the
posession of Thelma Gallant, which says, in part: "The friends and acquaintance of
Mr. John Gallant are requested to attend his burial service at the residence of Col. J. M. Gallent at 10
o'clock tomorrow Sept. 5, 1876."

Gallant, Franklin (b. BEF 1817, d. BEF 26 OCT 1833)
Note: Birth yr. is a guess. He was still a minor in 1827, when his Uncle Daniel's
will was filed. In May of the following yr., his father sought to be made his
guardian and posted a $6,000 bond. After this, Franklin seems to drop from
sight, and it would appear he was dead bef. 26 Oct 1833. (See NOTES for
Pamelia).

Gallant, Pamelia E (b. DEC 1817, d. 24 JUN 1897)
Note: There is a note in the Joe Hart Collection at the
York Co. Historical Center. It says "Pamelia E. born after 1802; Stephen Miller
Gallant born before 1802." Dates and places shown here are given by the Lees,
who noted that she was "single." They show her given name as "Amelia." There
are two documents in the York Co. records dealing with her. One makes her older
bro., Stephen M., her guardian in all matters. It's dated 26 Oct 1833, and shows
he put up a bond of two hundred dollars. The other, which is not dated, is
addressed to Benjamin Chambers, an officer of the court, and says in part "...the last
will and testament of my uncle Daniel Gallent I am entitled to fifty dollars and
this is to inform you that I apoint and constitute my brother Stephen M.
Gallent my gardian to collect the same." The courts in that period could not
release money from an estate directly to a minor, hence the need for a
guardianship. Pamelia could receive money under Daniel's will only if one of
the nephews died before reaching 21 (see NOTES for Daniel). However, Daniel's
wife broke the will. Apparently Pamelia went out to MS with her father after
his severe business setback. The 1870 census for Amite Co., MS, shows a female,
A.E., 49 yrs., living with John Gallant, Jr. She could well be Pamelia, but the
age given would place her b. yr. as 1821. Her date of d. furnished by the Lees.

Note: EMAIL on 10-26-03:
Nancy C. Bynun is listed on the 1850 census living with her brother Cyrus L. Hunter in Lincoln Co. NC. She is reported as buried in Macpelah Cemetery in Lincoln Co. NC but no dates are given. According to her father's family record she was born 21 Dec 1790. Hope this information is helpful. Paulette Haynes

Accd. to "Abstracts of Vital Records From Raleigh, North Carolina Newspaper,
1820-1829, Vol. 1" compiled by Lois Smathers Neal, pub. by The Reprint Co.,
Spartanburg, SC, 1980, she was a dau. of Rev. H. Hunter of Huntersville,
Lincoln Co. NC., a few miles north of Charlotte. She and Daniel, " of White
Hall, Mecklenburg Co." were m. by the Rev. J. M'Ree. Bondsman was Robert J.
Dinkins. Vol. 2 reports Daniel died, "aged about 60," in Mecklenburg Co. on
18 Sep 1827. The following yr. there was a report of her m. to John Bynum, Esq.,
of Chatham Co. on 5 Aug., in Mecklenburg.
Linda Blackwelder, Steele Creek historian, has this comment: "I believe this
should be John W. Byrum. This is part of my husband's family even though I
don't have this info. there were no Bynums is Steele Creek but there were
several Byrums. Robert Dinkins' home was on Nations Ford Rd. which parallels
York Rd. about two miles from where the Gallant property was.
She adds: "There is a Nancy Byrom listed as 'early member of Flint Hill Baptist
Church 1793 - 1835' in the church history. Almost all of the Dinkins on Nations
Ford went to this church which is close to the old Blackstock ARP (mother
church of Central Steele Creek). This church is located near I-77 and Carowinds
Blvd. at the NC/SC state line. I strongly suspect that this Nancy is the same
as above. According to the Flint Hill records, she was dismissed by letter in
1837, indicating she had moved. John W. is never mentioned. Perhaps he had
died. This was about the time that so many people were moving to Alabama, TN,
etc. from this area. Neither she or her husband are buried at Flint Hill...It
is located in York Co., SC but is just @1/4 mile from the NC line at Steele
Creek."
She writes further: "I now am sure it was John Byrun of Chatham County. Upton
Byrum, my husband's great .. great .. leased old White Hall from John Byrum in
1812. In the lease it indicates John Byrum of Chatham Co ... By the way, White
Hall was the old house on the Johnson Farm, so my area for them is confirmed."Accd. to "Abstracts of Vital Records From Raleigh, North Carolina Newspaper,

Hunter, Humphrey (b. 14 MAY 1755, d. 21 AUG 1827)

He served in the Revolution, was captured by the British but escaped. He m.
