Note: "As of Aug 1884, little is know of James. Accd. to the DAR app., the father of the first James was Daniel, and at least two of the children were b. in VA. The app. states that James did patriotic service during the Revolution in that he 'provided beef for the troops' 'possibly in Mecklenburg Co.' and cites family tradition as to the place of residence, and adds that no proof has been found. His 'service' is proven by a State of NC record which reads; 'In General Assembly at Halifax October Session 1779 This may certify that Mr. James Gallant was allowed eighteen pounds four shillings for a beef for the use of Nine Months men, as report of the Committee of Claims concurred with'. The fee book of the Augusta Co., VA court has an entry for 'James Gallant, Frederick' in 1764, but gives no indication of the service rendered. Watkins says there is a record showing he owned land at Winchester, in Frederick Co,VA. His wife's surname also shows in early records of Augusta Co. Watkins says Mary died, and James then m. Sarah McDonough. It isn't known when he came to York Co, SC, but he died there, his estate was settled there, [see notes for James Jr.] and he is buried there, in Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery. His headstone, on plot D4-9, is heavily crusted with lichen and difficult to read. It says:'Dedicated to the Memory of James Gallent who departed this life Nov.24, 1807 aged 80 years.' There is also this poem:
"Our age to seventy years is set
How short term, How frail the State
And if to eighty we arrive,
We rather sigh and groan than live.:
Nearby, on plot C1-31 is a much smaller stone inscribed: 'Malissa Gallent, Jan.1, 1798-Nov. 1, 1799, aged 23 months.' One can only speculate that she was a granddaughter. The birthplace of James hasn't been determined, but there is some consensus that it was either PA or VA. Birth order of the children is suggested by FAD"

Note: His birth yr. is calculated from the 1850 MS census, which showed him to be 64.
If this correct, then his father, John, was only 16 when he m. Anna Miller.
He would, therefore, have become of marriageable age in 1806. There seems to be
no consensus on who his wife was, and when and where they were married,
but the name I find in two sources is Nancy Miller. There is no indication thus
far of when they moved to MS.

Note: Most information on the Gallent-Dunn line was furnished by Mr. and Mrs.
Llewellyn Gallent Lee, Rt. 2, Box 186, Zachary, LA, who list the following
sources: family bible in the posession of Mrs. Margaret Gallent Phares,
Clinton, LA; clippings found w/bible; a letter written about the family by
William Addison Gallent in 1927, when he was 80, and recollections of other
family members. Since James was 38 when he m. Jane, he may have had an earlier
wife. This branch of the family began using the spelling Gallent early in the
1800s. The fam. bib. shows James II as "Col." which would indicate he served in
a militia. Additional information from Thelma Gallant includes this eulogy:
"Died--at his residence, near Bethany Church, in Amite County Mississippi,
December 29th, 1892, after a brief illness, Col. James M. Gallent, in his 85th
year of his life. The death of this aged servant of God calls for more than a
brief announcement. For over fifty years he has faithfully served the church as
a ruling elder. Born in the York District, South Carolina in 1808, when quite a
young man (1830) he removed to Amite County Mississippi. Here he began life as
a teacher. Among the audience assembled at his funeral ____ ____ ____ ____, __
said their first instruction had been received under him. __ _____ of superior
kind, __ making ______ ___ of his ________, __ posession a moral character of
great excellence, he ________ himself upon the community. Kindly and sympatheic
he made friends and early became a factor for good of his county. In two areas
he represented his county; the State Legislature, and for many years sat as a
member of the Board of County Supervisors. For many years he was Postmaster at
Ariel, his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Jane C. Dunn. The fruits of
this marriage were three sons and six daughters, all of them are living and
following in footsteps of father's faith. In 1850 he made profession of his
faith, and united with the Bathany Presbyterian Church. In 1861 he with_ Mr.
J.W. Anderson (?), who still survives was elected to the ruling eldership and
was ordained by Rev. Ephraim Y. McLean, pastor. From that time he has been
entirely connected with this tryst, Bethany Church, during all those years
being its clerk, and none ever more faithful and punctually discharged the
duties of his office. God has greatly blessed the church and the consistent
Christian lives of those two Godly elders and preserving them so long as ruler
of his house. Consistent and wise Col. G. ruled well. For many years he was
Superintendent of the Sunday school, and failing sight and hearing precluded
him from its duties he was always present to aid and help in the instruction of
the young. So deaf that he could hear but little of the public preaching, yet
he was always, when health and strength permitted, in the assembly of God's
people. Fifty years ago he sat for the first time in the Synod of Mississippi in
Baton Rouge, and at the recent session of the Synod at Baton Rouge his son sat
for the first time, a representative from the same church. Thus our covenant
keeping God raises up sons to take o're the falling mantles of the fathers. His
Christian character not only impressed itsself upon his family circle and the
church, but upon the whole community. (Biblical quote, can't read.) ____ heavy
on Bethany Church. In the early Spring, McAllister, the sainted pastor, entered
into his rest, and not the _____ year witnesses the "gathering home" of the
aged and honored elder. How mysterious are his ways, sorrowing wife, sister,
children and church. "You sorrow not as these who have no hope, yea rather let
your hearts rejoice that the "Pilgrims staff" is exchanged for the crown of
rightousness, he being dead yet speaketh may the great head of the church sooth
and comfort all troubled hearts and raise up more faithful now to stand in
their places." It's signed "M.G.S." (My copy is third or fourth from the
original and very difficult to read.) Thelma also found a reference to James
among records of comissioned officers of the Miss. Malitia 1841-48, Dept. of
Archives and Hist., Jackson, MS and in "Source Material for Miss. Hist., Amite
Co., Vol. 3, Part 3, Pages 163,164.) The period was during the Mexican War, and
James was listed as Colonel of Toler's Sixth Regiment. He was over 50 when the
Civil War began.

Note: Jane's parents were John Adamson Dunn and Jane E. (C.?) Johnson. His parents
were Rodger Dunn and Sarah Adamson. Her parents were William P. Johnson and
Ruth Gray. Tucked in the J.M. Gallent II family bible in the posession of
Frances D. Phares is a newspaper clipping which reads, in part: "Died at her
residence in Amite Co. Miss. Feb. 7, 1877 Mrs. Ruth Johnson 88 years old, wife
of the late William P. Johnson formerly of Charleston and dau. of Mr. George
Gray of Newberry Dist. S. Carolina. Mrs. Johnson posessed a mind of
extraordinary tenderness and dignity that charmed all who enjoyed her
acquaintance and endeared her in the hearts of her children and relatives."
