Gallant, John (b. ABT 1770, d. 1853)
Note: "Date of birth and position in family are guesses. He first appears in the SC census in 1800 so he must have married in the previous 10 yrs. By 1810 his name is followed by 'Esq', which could mean he was some sort of govt. official such as a Justice of the Quorum (same as justice of the peace). He appears in the census for the last time in 1830. Watkins said he was b. 1767 in VA this date however conflicts with the substantiated birth year of his bro. Daniel. She shows his d. in 1853. Mention of John is sparse in the records still available from that early time. A lease on file in the York Co. Historical Center, Deed Bk. F#489 p. 663-663, indicates he had land west of the Catawba River, on the 'Main Branch of Wildcat Creek' in 1805. He was foreman of the March Term Grand Jury, 1818, which, it it's presentment, says in part: 'We the Grand Jurors of York District present as a Grievance, the want of a Penitentiary in this State...'. Apparently the sentiment wasn't wide spread; the state didn't open its first one until 1865. In the 'Store Account Book of J & E Springs, 1806-1834' there is an entry dated 24 Jun 1808 under a running account of Carpenter Sam (a free black artisan) 'To cash for Mr. Gallant given for you $1.00' indicating Sam did some work for Mr. Gallant, who left payment with Springs who was a large plantation owner in the Fort Mill area (east of the Catawba River). He also appears in 'Alexander Kin' Vol. II, by Chas. C. and Virginia Alexander, 1990. Southern Historical Press, Greenwood, SC. On p. 382 is an account of Harmon Alexander and his estate. John was one of the appraisers and one of the buyers at the estate sale, 1826. The land is described as 'on the road to Lands Ford.' This road, now Ebenezer Road, runs past the cemetery where John's father, James, is buried. The road went from Yorkville to a crossing of the Catawba River in the Chester District that was called Lands Ford. When his father's estate was settled (see notes for James Jr.) all of the children received an equal share except John, who got $20. This, coupled with the fact no land or personal property is mentioned in the settlement, suggests that John was living on the family homestead, very probably leased Indian land, and may have been living there since his marriage, so he and his bride could care for his aging father. He suffered a financial disaster in 1839 when his property was seized to satisfy a civil judgement against him. Dunagan speculates that it was about this time that he moved to Amite Co. MS where his son, James Madison Gallant I and grandson, James Madison II were established. John appears there in the 1850 census living with his son John Jr., as a farmer, b. in VA, and gives his age at 80, thus placing his b. yr. at 1770. The Lees give his yr. of d. as 1853, and Dunagan did not find his James M. I in the 1870 census."

Miller, Anna (b. BEF 1769, d. BEF 1839)
Note: Louise Pettus, Rock Hill, SC, an authority on the early families of the York
and Lancaster Districts, says Anna was the dau. of Stephen Miller and Hannah
Webb, who probably was a dau. of James Webb (b. 1761). James and bro.
Theodorick
came to York c. 1775 and built a mill on Steele Creek. James' will, filed in
1814, leaves a slave and some land to his "daughter Hannah." Both James and his
bro. are buried in the Old Unity Cemetery at Fort Mill, SC. The stone for James
says he d. 8 Dec. 1813, "aged 52 years, 9 months."
Stephen Miller's will, filed 8 May 1789, shows Anna married to "John Gallent."
This would place their m. at no later than that date. Watkins says Anna's given
name was Nancy, which is a nickname for Anne and Anna. Minnie Lee Gallant wrote
that both Stephen and Hannah were buried in the cemetery of Six Mile Creek
Presbyterian Church, as is Anna. Pettus confirmed this and also
offered the following: "Charles Miller, the father of your
Stephen, did have an Indian lease in the Lancaster Indian Land, not too far
from Six Mile Creek. Miller kept the first Catawba Indian record book (book
lost in 1831) and also had land in the Waxhaws. My friend Nancy Crockett thinks
he lived in the Waxhaws. Maybe he did, but I am inclined to think he lived in
the Indian Land or else wouldn't have been so much involved in the leasing
system. He would have lived closer to the main Catawba village than any of the
other state-appointed Indian agents (there were five and the law required that
three sign every lease along with the 'Chief and head men' of the Catawba
Indians)." Anna's yr. of d. is derived from the fact that she's buried in SC,
and John, her husband, went to live in MS in 1839.
