Note: At least three published genealogies carry the lines of this early
Swiss/Germanic family. Accd. to "Carpenters A Plenty" by Robt. C. Carpenter,
Gateway Press, Balt., 1982: "The Rudisill family originated in Switzerland
where, in the early 17th century, two villages in St. Callen Canton had
'Rudisuhli' residents. The disruptive period of the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648
in Germany was marked by movements of people. Sometime early in the 17th
century,the Rudisills moved northward along the Rhine into Germany and settled
at Michelfeld, not far from Hiedelberg. Hans Rudisill, age 16, was at Hilsbach
in 1661. He had been b. abt. 1645. This Hans Rudisill is the most distant
ancestor of the Rudisills of NC. On 30 Jan 1666 he m. Anna, dau. of Wendel and
Appollonia (Liebeld?). Hans res. at Michelfeld where he was a citizen and
judge; he died there 26 May 1723, leaving three surviving sons. His eldest
son, Hans Jacob Rudisill, b. 4 Oct 1666, a carpenter, m. Cleophe Neff 19 Feb
1688 at Michelfeld. She was b. 9 Sep 1671, and d. 6 Feb 1758, dau. of Ulrich
Neff (son Rudolf Neff and wife Regina) and wife Catherine Endriss (dau.
Matthias Endriss and wife Anna Maria Hoffman)." Hans and Cleophe had 12
children, including Johann Jacob Rudisill, b. 10 Apr 1706. Accd. to "Our Wyant
Family" pub. by the author, Terry R. Young, after 1982, Johann came to this
country aboard the ship Mortonhouse, which arrived at Philadelphia on 17 Aug
1729. One author has found him listed as "Hance Jacob Roatslice," and another
as "Hans Jacob Rotesele." He settled in York Co. PA, m. Elizabeth Hamsbacher
and there is a record at Christ Lutheran Church in York showing they had 15
children. He died at York 1786-7. Among the children was a son, Jonas, b.
28 Apr 1735. On 11 Jun 1754 he m. Maria Elizabeth Moul, dau. of Bartholomew
Moul. He died at York in Sep 1799 and his wife d. 1803. During the Revolution,
accd. to Young, Jonas served in Capt. Simon Copenhafer's Company, 1st
Battalion, York Co. Associators. A DAR listing in the Patriot Index shows he
was a Private. They had, among other children, a son, Jonas, Jr., b. 16 Jul
1767. Two of his grandfather's bros. came to this country in the 10 yrs.
following Johann's arrival, and one settled in PA and the other in NC. When
Jonas, Jr. was in his early 20s he followed his uncle down to NC and settled in

granddaughter of Jimmy Grier, a founder of the Central Steele Creek
Presbyterian Church. There is a photo-portrait of her in the posession of
Margaret Gallant Winchester of Charlotte. Her headstone has Ferrie for her
given name. It has her birth yr., but mo. and day, and other data on her, and
her children comes from "The Grier Family Record..Recording a list of
descendants of Thomas Pringle Grier, born Dec. 10, 1815" by Bess Grier of
Steele Creek, Meck. Co., NC. 1966.

Fred served for a number of yrs. as a deacon at Central Steele Creek Church.
"The Grier Family Record" gives his yr. of b. as 1896, but his grave marker and
other records show the yr. 1893. When he m. Elma in Apr 1916 he gave his age as
22. this is consistent with a Dec 1893 b. date. They were m. by W.B. Lindsay
and the witnesses were Carrie Gallant (a sister a yr. older than Fred),,
T.C.Cathey and Mrs. Lindsay. Elma gave her age as 17. The situation offers itself for speculation. Fred and his family
were pillars of Steele Creek Presbyterianism, yet it appears Fred and Elma were
m. by a justice of the peace in Charlotte. Perhaps both families disapproved of
the match. (Marriage data is from Meck. Co. records, Book 1889 - 1898)
