Major Charles Ewell recorded in his Family Bible this statement: "I was told that my great grandfather was an English gentleman by the name of Charles Ewell; that three of his sons came to this country and the state of Virginia during the reign of Charles the 2nd that on account of the disturbance of the Indians, Solomon and James retired to the Eastern Shore, and Charles, the eldest son, remained in Va and married a Miss Bertrand, who was the daughter of of the Rev. Bertrand, a French gentleman who left one other child, a son, who married, died, and left a daughter, who married a Mr. Griffin. My great grandfather Charles left three sons, Charles, Bertrand, and Solomon. My parents had nineteen children, myself being the eighteenth. I married a daughter of my Uncle Solomon. I had by her two sons, one died in infancy, the other one, named Charles, married a Miss Carter.
